Today I was fortunate enough to be one of six students from IUPUI PRSSA to attend the mentoring panel hosted by the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations and DePaul PRSSA. Basically, I got to walk around downtown Chicago and meet professionals from around the country.
I spent the whole day geeking out, whether it was from the beauty of Chicago’s metropolitan area to our visit at the public relations agency Weber-Shandwick. It was really great not only to learn more about the industry but to connect with other public relations students.
For me, it’s so easy to get caught up in work and school that it can sometimes be hard to set aside time to attend social events, even meetings of organizations like PRSSA. I made it a personal goal this semester to be more involved, and going on this day trip gave me excellent incentive to continue pursuing that.
I learned so much from the members of the Plank Center panel, and got to see the inner workings of a multinational company. I’m a year and a half from obtaining my journalism degree with a concentration in public relations, and opportunities like today reassure me that I made the right decision when I chose my major.
Of course, I cannot discount how great it was to have Chicago as the backdrop for today. I truly think I fell in love with the city, and I can’t wait to go back!
