The celebration of international cultures continues to bring futsal fans together
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (AUG. 9, 2018) — The fourth annual occurrence of the Mayor’s International Futsal Cup, hosted by Indiana Futsal, will take place Saturday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 3 outside of the Indiana Statehouse at 201 N. Capitol St.
The tournament will have locally-owned food trucks with flavors representative of the teams’ countries and Sun King Brewery will be onsite. Radio One and their affiliates will have DJs onsite providing international music to keep the crowd moving. In addition to the action on the courts, community organizations are invited to share their resources with attendees.
The event features over 40 teams representing 32 different countries and is the largest adult futsal tournament in the United States. Teams play in a World Cup-style tournament, playing three games in a group stage before progressing to knockout rounds.
“Seeing members of the Indianapolis community from 32 countries compete together is incredible. Our staff, as well as our partners and sponsors, always aim to make this event as fun and inclusive as possible. We’re very proud of how it’s grown,” says Justin Becht, director of Indiana Futsal.
The event is free and open to the public. Organizations interested in hosting a booth at the tournament should contact Justin Becht at email@example.com.
The Mayor’s International Futsal Cup is made possible in part by partnerships with Indy Eleven, Downtown Indy and the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office.
Futsal is a version of soccer played on a hard surface with a smaller, heavier ball and teams of five-a-side. This format of play emphasizes ball control and skillful technique as players have a smaller space to utilize.
